New Winter Survival in the New Year

The noted military Winter Survival championships will be all out in the last week of January next year in the Hruby Jesenik Mountains in the North-East area of the Czech Republic. The 15th year of Czech Military Forces’ Winter Outdoor Polyathlon Winter Survival 2009 is under preparation made by the Czech Army General Staff and the University of Defence in close collaboration.

The new year of the competition will be endowed with several new items given by the University of Defence Physical Training and Sports Centre. For the very first time the events will include individual skicross race in knock-out form and the athletes will work with avalanche search set to accomplish one of the events. However, the competition maintains all the priorities of an extreme challenge. Twenty Czech and foreign military teams will compete in the skills of surviving in the mountains in winter in the period from 26 till 30 January 2009 in the Hruby Jesenik Mountains.

The patrols will spend four days covering many kilometres moving, climbing rock tops, crossing stream gulches, rescuing an injured person, up- and down-hill measured phases on skis, relay races, will shoot pistol and air rifle, throw trench knife at a target, will overnight sleeping in the open air and will have to complete practical tasks testing their mental strength.

Six international teams have applied for starting in the challenging event. They are for Germany and Belgium and two for Poland and Slovakia. For the Czech forces fourteen teams should participate. Qualification for the championship will be for the teams representing the Joint Forces, Support Command, military schools and Military Police.
