Winter Survival: A Big Challenge Also This Year
Winter Survival: A Big Challenge Also This Year

Only a couple of days remain to go till another year of the prestigious international Winter Survival competition that shall take place from 25 till 30 January 2009 in the Hruby Jesenik Mountains. A representative of the University of Defence will be Jan Tancibudek who was in the team that won the bronze medal last year. In the time of this interview he was representing the University of Defence to Military Winter Games – ACR skiing championships that was held on 19 to 22 January 2009 in the Jesenik Mountains.

In what event did you compete?

I started in giant slalom, slalom and skicross, and also in free 15-km cross-country run and mix relay that consisted of 5 kilometres for women and 10 kilometres for men.

What were your competitors?

Various. There were also excellent sportsmen who showed their abilities right from the start.

Are you satisfied with your performance?

I think yes except slalom where I was disqualified for missing a gate.

So, can you summarise your score?

Third in giant slalom and second in mix relay, but the later mainly thank to our female support.

Do you consider these Games a part of preparation to this year Winter Survival endurance?

Certainly, yes. This competition was rather a practice for me, while nothing else but Winter Survival 2009 will be the main event.

But, the preparation surely included also something else. How long have you been working on your fitness before the international event?

Endurance forms the basis and you have to work on it during the year. You cannot get ready for the event in two months, for example. You have to practice for a long time and just trim the condition and readiness in winter.

Your start last year was your first appearance in the event. This year the team is different. Who makes the team and what is your chemistry?

The team members are WO Petr Cisar and captain Ludek Cicmanec. I think we make up a good team but only the competition will check our bonds.

You won the third place with the team last year. What are your ambitions for the Jesenik Mountains in this year?

We would like to resume our last year successful position. We will use all available means allowed by fair play regulations to move a step up.

You are going to face events like fifty kilometres off-road movement by map, mountaineering, downhill and cross-country skiing, water stream and rock blocks crossing, paintball weapons shooting, wounded person rescue and transport or overnight in the open air in this year, too. New will be a skicross race and working with avalanche locator. What are you afraid most?

The most challenging will be the two-day movement by map. We are afraid of unforeseen situations like injuries, bad weather or getting lost in forest.

What is the mood in the team?

Good. We are looking forward to the competition and waiting what will come and what we will be able to do to represent the University of Defence.
