Monday 26 January, the first day of competition within military Winter Survival 2009 Championships held in the Hruby Jesenik Mountains was devoted to skiing events. Ready mentally and well trained physically, soldiers arrived to the winter challenge start. However, the road to finish passes three stages.

The first of the many events included in championship busy schedule was skicross run in three knock-out rounds. The athletes went by four downhill along two separate tracks struggling to be the winner or runner-up of their respective pools as those two qualified for the second round. The same rule applied to qualifying from the semifinals to finals. The event started as early as dawn on the hill slope above Figura mountain hotel.

Unmistakably best ones who deserved winning the event were the Unversity of Defence students team I. Second place was won by the team for Tyniste nad Orlici ammunition base while the third place was shared by the teams for 22 Air Force Base of Namest nad Oslavou and for 233 mountain rangers battalion of Mittenwal, Germany. “Why we have included skicross? We wanted to make the entire competition more attractive,” said the chief of the competition University of Defence Physical Training and Sports Centre’s Jan Migdau.

Later, in the afternoon, the athletes faced another event – evacuation of an injured person. The teams first had to cover several kilometres to Praded hill top. Then, one of the three team members simulated injured person being evacuated by his two teammates on sledge or UT 2000 stretchers to Kurzovní hotel. The track for evacuation followed the tourist marked route leaving the highest point of the mountains to the saddle and further to Kurzovni Hotel.

Aggregation of the two events results made the following standing after Winter Survival 2009 Stage I: best performance was given by 73rd tank battalion Praslavice, followed by University of Defence team I and German mountain rangers.

For Tuesday and Wednesday the extreme competition schedule plans actions similar to military teams operation in snow-covered mountains. The two-day endurance stage represents the most challenging part making a team or two give up every year.
